Free Choice and Contextually Permitted Actions

چکیده
We present a solution to the paradox of free choice permission by introducingstrong and weak permission in a deontic logic of action. It is shown how counterintuitive consequences of strong permission can be avoided by limiting the contexts in which an action can be performed. This is done by introducing the only operator, which allows us to say that only is performed (and nothing else), and by introducing contextual interpretation of action terms.

Imperatives as Obligatory and Permitted Actions
We present a dynamic deontic model for the interpretation of imperative sentences in terms of Obligation (O) and Permission (P). Under the view that imperatives prescribe actions and unlike the so-called “standard solution” (Huntley, 1984) these operators act over actions rather that over statements. Then by distinguishing obligatory from non obligatory actions we tackle the paradox of Free Cho...
متن کاملAction negation and alternative reductions for dynamic deontic logics
Dynamic deontic logics reduce normative assertions about explicit complex actions to standard dynamic logic assertions about the relation between complex actions and violation conditions. We address two general, but related problems in this field. The first is to find a formalization of the notion of ‘action negation’ that (1) has an intuitive interpretation as an action forming combinator and ...
متن کاملPreferential choice and coordination conditions
We present a process algebra with conditional expressions of which the conditions concern the enabledness of actions in the context in which a process is placed. With those conditions, it becomes easy to model preferential choices. A preferential choice of a process is a choice whereby certain alternatives are excluded if at least one of the other alternatives is permitted by the context in whi...
متن کاملOn Contextually Embedded Choices
Starting from Amartya Sens works on rational behaviour, in this essay a contextually-embedded choice theory is presented. Using concepts and tools from poset mathematics, we show how to inject in rational choice theory cultural and social e¤ects. Speci cally, we de ne some choice super-structures seen as choice sets transformations imposed by accepted external consistency of choice requiremen...
متن کاملModalities over Action, I. Model Theory
This paper analyzes a language for actions and the deontic modalities over actions — i.e., the modalities permitted, forbidden and obligatory. The work is based on: (1) an action language that allows the representation of concurrent and repetitive events; (2) a deontic language that allows the representation of “free choice permissions”; (3) a proof procedure that admits a logic programming sty...
